Slow Fade

“Big” sins scare us. Murder, adultery, child molestation, grand theft auto, and terrorism cause most of us to recoil in horror. Satan would like nothing better. Christ-followers must be aware of the seductiveness of slowly fading from a passionate love for Christ. In C.S. Lewis’ classic work, The Screwtape Letters, portrays the correspondence of an experienced demon and his apprentice in the attempt to draw away their assigned human from following God. He records, “You will say that these are very small sins; and doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the Enemy. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. . . Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one-the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” In our new Sunday morning series, we will be exposing these tricks crafted by the enemy to cause us to slowly fade away from our devotion to Christ.
